Senate response to the Modern Slavery Bill

On 28 June 2018, the Senate referred the provisions of the Modern Slavery Bill 2018 to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 24 August 2018.

There were six key recommendations, including the recommendation for an independent statutory officer to support the operation of the Modern Slavery Act, a review of the compliance thresholds and possible need for mandatory penalties in three years.

The Modern Slavery Bill should be discussed in parliament in the week commencing 10 September 2018.
