We join Anglicare Australia in calling on Federal and state governments to invest in housing for people on the lowest incomes. The 2019 Anglicare Rental Affordability Snapshot released today surveyed over 69,000 rental listings across Australia and found that there is a chronic shortage of affordable rentals across Australia.
The Snapshot highlights the urgent need for investment in social and affordable housing for people living on low incomes, particularly for older Australians. Less than 1% of properties available for rent across Australia were affordable for a single person on the Age pension. Government investment in social housing is crucial so that older Australians don’t have to choose between buying decent food, filling prescriptions or buying clothes in order to pay their rent.
