04 Dec 2019

Today the Federal Government announced that victims of forced marriage will be able to access the Support for Trafficked People Program without participating in a criminal justice response. Minister Ruston said: “Changes to the Support for Trafficked People Program recognises the need to provide comprehensive, effective and tailored support without requiring forced marriage victims to participate in the criminal justice process.”

This announcement  follows the successful trial of a program that gave forced marriage victims up to 200 days of intensive support without having to take part in a criminal investigation.

This is a welcome announcement which will ensure that anyone facing a forced marriage will be supported without the trauma of participating in a criminal investigation.
