The Counselling Support for Disadvantaged Women project, delivered by Agape Outreach with support from the Mercy Foundation, provided specialised, trauma-informed counselling to vulnerable and elderly women in the Tweed region. Over 32 weeks from September 2024 to April 2025, the program offered twice-weekly one-hour sessions, reaching approximately 60 women who had experienced domestic violence, elder abuse, trauma, homelessness, or financial insecurity.
The project achieved significant outcomes in improving participants’ emotional wellbeing, safety, and social connection. Most women reported reduced anxiety, increased clarity, and stronger coping skills. Several participants were able to reconnect with family, and two women successfully returned to family homes, demonstrating tangible progress toward stability and recovery. Counselling also raised awareness of elder abuse, particularly financial and emotional neglect, leading to improved safety and support responses.
Case managers observed enhanced daily functioning among clients, with reductions in distress, substance use, and interpersonal conflict. Consistent attendance reflected trust in the service and sustained engagement. Safeguarding protocols ensured safety through trauma-informed practice, strict confidentiality, and clear referral pathways. Overall, the project contributed to rebuilding lives, strengthening resilience, and reducing isolation among disadvantaged women recovering from trauma and homelessness.
