Making a house a home with Home in a Box

With the generous support of our donors and supporters, the Mercy Foundation continues to help people who have experienced long term homelessness to settle into their new home.

Home in a Box was developed to provide a warm and welcoming home to people who have experienced chronic homelessness that are moving into permanent housing. Home in a Box contains brand new, high quality sheets, towels, pillows, a quilt, dinner set, cutlery, glasses, fry pan and saucepan, a toaster and a kettle and kitchenware. We source our products from MyHouse, Maxwell & Williams, Hospitality Online, Kennards Self Storage and other quality manufacturers.

This year we have delivered 34 x Homes in Boxes to a total of 16 women, 19 men and two families. One family  consisted of 3 children, their mother and grandmother, and the other included 2 children and their mother. They are all now living safely and comfortably in their new homes.

Other recipients have included:

  • an elderly man who was homeless for 20 years,
  • a couple who were sleeping rough for a year,
  • a woman in her 50’s who was sleeping rough for 3 years,
  • a young woman who was homeless for 4 years.

We received an email from the worker that helped house the woman in her 50’s . She wrote that her client was “super excited to receive the goods and couldn’t believe everything was brand new. It is lovely to see her set up in her own place and doing well. She is very appreciative for the support. This makes such a difference to her establishing a safe and homely environment after so many years of deprivation and hardship.”

We know that Home in a Box helps disadvantaged people to settle into their new home and start afresh. Thank you for your support, we couldn’t do it without you.
