Congratulations to Julie Sneddon, awarded the 2019 Cath Leary Social Justice Award

Congratulations to Julie Sneddon, CEO of Cana Communities, who was awarded the Cath Leary Social Justice award  in recognition of her work, effort and commitment to ending homelessness by transforming the lives of disadvantaged people, addressing poverty and returning dignity. The winner was announced at the Mercy Day celebrations on 17th September 2019. This is an award given each year by the Mercy Foundation to an outstanding individual or organisation that has made a significant contribution to social justice in Australia.

Cana Farm was opened in 2011 and is now an important part of Cana Communities mission. Along with a team of volunteers, Julie works with people who are re-entering into life after facing enormous difficulties.  At Cana Farm, people are encouraged to learn from each other and participate in education through the Outreach Program of Western Sydney TAFE.  The farm grows delicious vegetables and fruit that are shared at meal times, and these crops are also made into produce which is sold as products such as chutney and jams.

The Farm offers a safe place and a positive community. It offers extensive outreach opportunities, education, life skills and community involvement. It is a place where everyone is welcome and everyone is celebrated.
